NIPPON Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) says the total tonnage on its register has passed the 160 million gross tonnage mark for the first time. ClassNK says it had 7,017 ships with a total of 160,522,744 gross tonnage on its register as of the end of November 2008. IT says in a statement: “This builds upon the notable achievement made last year of becoming the first classification society ever to have more than 150 million gross tons under class.

A German military helicopter chased away pirates on Thursday who were trying to board an Egyptian ship off the coast of Somalia. One of the ship's crew was shot in the attack. The bulk carrier with 31 crew was passing through the Gulf of Aden on its way to Asia when gun-toting pirates in a speedboat began pursuing it, said Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting center. A passing ship alerted the Kuala Lumpur-based bureau, which asked a multinational naval coalition force in the area to help, said Choong.

Gazprom and the Turkmen government have agreed on the technical requirements for the Caspian gas pipeline's Turkmen stretch, as well as a gas transit facility to be built at the South Iolotan field, the Russian gas monopoly's press office reported today according to RBC. The decisions were made during today's meeting between Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister Tacberdi Tagyyew.

Oil volumes to be pumped via Transneft’s trunk pipeline system could remain flat y-o-y in 2009, a source close to the company said. “There were fears that at some point oil volumes could drop by 30 mn tons. However, based on applications received from oil companies, the volume is 7 mn tons lower than in 2008” –the source noted. In addition, the company expects to see incremental volumes from Rosneft due to the commissioning of the Vankor field and from Tatneft as a result of the scheduled commissioning of a new refinery.

AN ExxonMobil Corporation subsidiary has been charged with violating the criminal provisions of the Clean Water Act in connection with a 2006 spill of about 15,000 gallons of diesel oil into the Mystic River from ExxonMobil’s oil terminal in Everett, Mass. ExxonMobil Pipeline Company has signed a plea agreement in which it will pay a total monetary payment of more than US$6.1 million and agree to have the Everett terminal monitored by court appointed observer. The plea agreement is subject to court approval. The spill occurred, essentially, because of poor maintenance.
