The EU Commission has approved a EUR 10 million grant to co-finance a Motorway of the Seas project in Trelleborg and Sassnitz. The aim is to upgrade the capacities of a rail/sea link and develop new intermodal train services. The Commission has also approved EUR five million in co-funding of a Motorways of the Sea project to improve the infrastructure in Karlshamn and Klaipeda and to support intermodal transports.

In January-October 2008, Spetsmornefteport “Primorsk” LLC (Leningrad Region, subsidiary of Transneft company) increased oil export by 0.5%, year-on-year, to 62.415.9 million tonnes, Administration of Big Port of St. Petersburg states. In the reported period, ship turnover in the port of Primorsk amounted to 1,149 units. Port Primorsk was put into operation on December 27, 2001 as the final stage of the first phase of Baltic Pipeline System (BPS) aimed at oil transportation from Timano-Pechersk and West-Siberian oil-and-gas provinces as well as from Kazakhstan.

In January-October 2008, the port of St. Petersburg handled 51.632.5 million tonnes of cargo (+4%, year-on-year), Administration of Big Port of St. Petersburg states. In the reported period, transshipment of dry bulks totaled 8.368.6 million tonnes (+2%, year-on-year) including 895,700 tonnes of ore (+39%, year-on-year), 1.804.0 million tonnes of coal and coke (-8%), 5.556.4 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+1%). Transshipment of loose dry cargo fell by 27% to 375,700 tonnes including 360,500 tonnes of grain (-29%), 9,500 tonnes of raw sugar and 5,700 tonnes of other loose cargo.

Kandla Port Trust has invited bids for four multi-purpose berths at Tuna Tekra, which will be the location of a special economic zone.The Trust is also looking to develop new facilities at Vadinar, some 260 kilometres from Kandla.At present, the site is used by oil tankers, but is being explored as a possible development area for containers and dry bulk. Its main advantage is its 34 metre draft.
