Forest-product supplier Weyerhaeuser Co. said Monday that it has stopped trying to sell its seven oceangoing freighters, citing tight financial markets and weak demand for their maritime shipping services. The vessels, which Weyerhaeuser said in May it wanted to sell, are part of the company's Westwood Shipping Line unit and transport forest products between North America and Asian business partners in Japan, South Korea and China. Weyerhaeuser still plans to sell Westwood Shipping's four regional short-line railways. They are used primarily to supply U.S.

Nikolai Asaul, Chairman of St. Petersburg Committee for Transit Transport Policy, and Evgeni Zubarev, President of St. Petersburg Passenger Vessel Owners Association, have signed a protocol regulating cooperation of the parties in the sphere of St. Petersburg water transport, CTTP press center reports. The document states that the parties are interested in further development of water transportation activities.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on December 25 signed a decree lowering export duty on oil to $119.1 per tonne from January 1, 2009, Interfax reports. The export duty on light oil products will be $92.6 a tonne, and that on dark products - $49.9 a tonne. The duties have been $192.1 on crude, $141.8 on light products and $76.4 on dark products since December 1. The January 1 duty is based on an average price of $43.966 per barrel of Russian crude in the period November 15-December 14. Export duty on crude peaked at $495.9 a tonne in August-September this year.

The Russian Baltic Fleet's frigate Neustrashimy (Fearless) protected over 50 commercial ships from pirates off the Somali coast in 2008, a Russian Navy spokesman said on Tuesday according to RIA Novosti. The missile frigate has been operating off the Horn of Africa according to international maritime law and agreements since the end of October. "During its mission in the Gulf of Aden, the Russian combat vessel escorted 13 convoys, totaling 51 ships, through the dangerous waters [off the Somali coast]," Capt. 1st Rank Igor Dygalo said.
