Throughput of St. Petersburg port up 4% to 51.6 mln t in Jan-Oct 08

In January-October 2008, the port of St. Petersburg handled 51.632.5 million tonnes of cargo (+4%, year-on-year), Administration of Big Port of St. Petersburg states. In the reported period, transshipment of dry bulks totaled 8.368.6 million tonnes (+2%, year-on-year) including 895,700 tonnes of ore (+39%, year-on-year), 1.804.0 million tonnes of coal and coke (-8%), 5.556.4 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+1%). Transshipment of loose dry cargo fell by 27% to 375,700 tonnes including 360,500 tonnes of grain (-29%), 9,500 tonnes of raw sugar and 5,700 tonnes of other loose cargo.

  In the 10-month period the port handled 1.030.7 million tonnes of timber (-51%) and 12.602.2 million tonnes of general cargo (+1%, year-on-year) including 3.453.3 million tonnes of ferrous metal (-5%), 1.221.8 million tonnes of non-ferrous metal (-3%), 1.651.8 million tonnes of scrap metal (-22%%). Transshipment of packaged goods amounted to 790,300 (+60%, year-on-year), refrigerated cargo 3.201.8 million tonnes (+1%), other general cargo 2.283.1 million tonnes (+28%). The port’s container throughput totaled 1,672,959 TEUS (+21%). Transshipment of oil cargo grew by 4% to 13.011.1 million tonnes. In January-October, the port’s turnover of ships amounted to 26,208 units. Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation. In 2007, the port’s cargo turnover amounted to 59.6 million tonnes. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
